I would like to join the Mad Hatter of Alice in Wonderland today and sing out loud to Gioachino Rossini: “A very merry un-birthday to you, to you!”. As a matter of fact I am quite aware that Rossini’s birthday was on Feb 29th, but the celebrations for his compleanno here in Pesaro, his hometown, have been so many that I wanted to pay him my tribute in my own way, one week later.
Here’s Cecilia Bartoli singing “Una voce poco fa”. However, as the aim of this blog is to have the reader know the real Italy, as seen from the heart, let me invite you to visit Rossini’s birthplace, in Via Rossini (of course), in the centre of Pesaro and, in the month of August, to buy the ticket for at least one of the musical events connected to the 33rd edition of the Rossini Opera Festival (from Aug 10th to Aug 23rd 2012).
Last but not least: if you pay a visit to Pesaro, don’t forget to try the “Pizza Rossini”, basically a “margherita pizza” (tomato and mozzarella cheese), with sliced boiled eggs and mayonnese on it. Taste it at the Osteria Da Pasqualon, in via Giordano Bruno, in Pesaro, close to the main square (Piazza del Popolo). A good osteria offering both traditional food (beans with pork rinds, piadina, passatelli, cresc’ tajed) and very good pizza. Fair prices.
